FEMA Proposes New Floodplain Maps

On November 6, 2010, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued revised preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) for King County. The revised maps are part of FEMA's initiative to update and digitize the nation's Flood Insurance Rate Maps.

Public Information Meeting

On January 26, 2011, the City of Auburn hosted a public information meeting at Dick Scobee Elementary School where FEMA presented information regarding the proposed DFIRM maps. At the meeting, FEMA gave a short presentation to provide information about the map update process and how interested parties can provide comments or appeal the proposed DFIRM maps.

Copies of the Revised Preliminary Flood Insurance Study and DFIRM maps issued by FEMA on November 6, 2010 can be viewed online on the King County websiteExternal link.

Paper copies of the proposed DFIRMs for the City of Auburn are available for viewing Monday-Friday between 8:00 AM-5:00 PM at the City of Auburn Customer Service Center on the 2nd Floor of the One East Main Building (1 East Main ST, Auburn).

The City of Auburn's Regulatory Floodplain Map is based on the Flood Insurance Rate Maps adopted by FEMA. A preliminary DRAFT of what the City's future Regulatory Floodplain Map would look like based on the DFIRMs currently proposed by FEMA can be viewed below:

City of Auburn Flood Hazard Regulations Update

On April 5, 2010, the Auburn City Council adopted Ordinance 6295 (PDF) which amended the City's Flood Hazard Regulations (Chapter 15.68 and related chapters of the Auburn City Code) to implement provisions of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Model Ordinance guidance for ensuring that local government floodplain management regulations comply with the federal Endangered Species Act. FEMA approved the City's amended flood hazard regulations for consistency with the model ordinance on September 21, 2011.

Chapter 15.68 ACC is used in conjunction with the City of Auburn Regulatory Floodplain map (PDF) to regulate development within the City's Regulatory Floodplain. Additionally, these regulations reference the following two FEMA guidance documents that provide detailed requirements for conducting required analyses and preparing habitat mitigation plans:
