Pet Licenses

The City of Auburn contracts with King County Animal Control (offsite) for animal control services, including pet licensing and enforcement. You may purchase a pet license over the counter from the City Clerk’s Office or from many other convenient locations (offsite) throughout King County.

You can also license or renew your pet license online at King County Pet Licensing (offsite) or by mail.

Potentially Dangerous Dogs

Auburn City Code Chapter 6.35 defines a potentially dangerous dog as any dog that when unprovoked:

  • Inflicts bites on a human or a domestic animal either on public or private property;
  • Chases or approaches a person upon the streets, sidewalks, or any public grounds in a menacing fashion or apparent attitude of attack, or any dog with a known propensity, tendency, or disposition to attack unprovoked, or to cause injury or otherwise to threaten the safety of humans or domestic animals;
  • Is known or should reasonably have been known by its owner to have aggressively bitten, attacked, or endangered the safety of humans or domestic animals.

A potentially dangerous dog is also defined as any dog that is known by the owner or should reasonably be known by the owner to be one of the following breeds or partially of such breed or to have an appearance and physical characteristics substantially similar to the following breeds:

American Pit Bull Terrier
American Staffordshire Terrier
Bull Terrier
Cane Corso
Dogo Argentino
Dogue de Bordeaux
Kuvasz
Pit Bull Terrier
Presa Canario
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Tosa Inu

The owner of a potentially dangerous dog is required to register a potentially dangerous dog with the City Clerk's Office. A registration form is available at the City Clerk’s Office located at City Hall, 25 West Main Street in Auburn. There is no fee for the registration. In addition to a registration, other requirements for potentially dangerous dogs include:

  • Photo of the dog must accompany the potentially dangerous dog registration form.
  • King County Pet License (available at the Auburn City Clerk’s Office).
  • All dogs must be walked on leash in the city. No one under the age of 16 years may walk a leashed potentially dangerous dog outside its proper enclosure.

Failure to comply with the provisions of Auburn City Code Chapter 6.35 shall constitute a violation punishable as a misdemeanor in accordance with ACC 9.02.030.
