Legislature

Every year the Washington State Legislature meets to engage in the process of public decision making. The objective is to reach consensus on a wide range of issues affecting every citizen and the future prosperity of Washington State. The process involves cooperation to make critical decisions in everyone's best interests. The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body with 49 members in the Senate and 98 members in the House of Representatives. Each district is served by one Senator and two House members.

Members of the Senate are elected to four-year terms, and House members are elected to two-year terms.

We have chosen representatives to carry out the difficult task of determining which laws and policies will best serve these interests. However, to effectively perform their job, legislators rely heavily on input from many different sources. Yet, much of what they actually decide depends on the views, interests and preferences of the citizens who elect them. Auburn is represented by two legislative districts: the 31 st District which is primarily South King and North Pierce County and the 47 th District made up of SE King County.

The 2007 legislators for Auburn’s districts are:

The 31st District is represented by Sen. Pam Roach (R-Auburn), Rep. Dan Roach (R-Sumner), and Rep. Christopher Hurst (D-Enumclaw). The 47th District legislators are: Sen. Claudia Kauffman (D-Kent), Rep. Geoff Simpson (D-Covington) and Rep. Pat Sullivan (D-Covington).
