Pedestrian TravelThe City of Auburn has a Sidewalk Improvement Program with a dedicated fund of $100,000 annually to install new sidewalks and rehabilitate existing sidewalks. In addition, the City leverages grant opportunities to fund sidewalks and walking paths, as well as general pedestrian safety improvements such as crosswalks. Also, sidewalks and/or walking paths are incorporated into general roadway improvement projects whenever possible. The Auburn City Council has identified three principal areas in which sidewalk improvements should be prioritized: corridors that provide access to and within the downtown area, school zones, and parks. Additional criteria for priority access improvements could include, but are not limited to, areas with high concentrations of senior citizens or disabled citizens and areas with high volumes of pedestrian-transit interaction. In addition to these general guidelines, the selection of future sidewalk improvements relies on a hierarchy of existing conditions. Key conditions that will be considered when prioritizing projects include:
If you know of a segment of sidewalk that is either missing or in need of repair, please contact Pablo Para at 253-876-1958 or via email. If the necessary repairs are minimal, the City may be able to repair immediately. For more extensive projects, the City will add the project to its long-term Sidewalk Improvement Program. For current city sidewalks, view the 2005 map of the City’s sidewalk network (PDF). |
