Gravel Street Maintenance

The City did a preliminary inventory of all of its gravel streets in December 2008. The results of this survey are shown on the map Preliminary Gravel Street Inventory Map(PDF).
After the inventory was completed, the City developed the following policy regarding the maintenance of these gravel streets:

  • Gravel streets that can be considered to be functioning more like driveways are shown in red on the Preliminary Gravel Street Inventory Map(PDF). These are all dead-end streets that provide access to 4 properties or less. Many of these streets are also too narrow to accommodate two-way traffic. The City will perform basic maintenance on these streets to ensure they remain safe for the traveling public. These streets remain eligible for paving as part of the Save Our Street Program but at a low priority level.
  • Gravel streets that can be considered to be functioning more like residential streets are shown in blue on the Preliminary Gravel Street Inventory Map(PDF). These are all gravel streets that either connect two existing paved public streets or provide access to 4 or more properties. These streets are also currently wide enough to accommodate two-way traffic. These streets are eligible for paving under the Save Our Streets Program at the same priority level as any other local street.

If you believe a gravel street is in need of maintenance work, contact Carlene Teterud, Street Division Manager or by telephone at 253-931-3068.

If you believe a street needs to be added or removed from the City’s inventory, or for more information on the City’s policy on maintaining gravel streets, contact Seth Wickstrom, Street Systems Engineer or by telephone at 253-804-5086.
