The City of Auburn's 270-acre Environmental Park District (EPD) was adopted by the City Council in August 2006. The District, which includes more than 100-acre Auburn Environmental Park (AEP), establishes unique opportunities for environmental, economic and social benefits to the region. Directly west of Auburn’s downtown area, the District is zoned for "green" manufacturing and development and promotes environmental uses proximate to the large Category 1 wetland within the AEP.
Incorporation of sustainable design and green building practices are the underlying bases for all future development in the District. Construction of "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" (LEED©) and Built Green© certified buildings is encouraged. Silver LEED certification and Built Green construction are required for Multi-family development. The city recognizes that much of the property in the District was developed under prior standards, so the goals of the District will be realized over time as properties redevelop.
The Environmental Park District (outlined in gold) is bounded by 15th Street NW to the north, the Interurban Trail and Union Pacific Railroad to the east, Highway 18 to the south and State Route 167 to the west in Auburn. Cross-hatched areas identify potentially re-developable areas.
