Disaster Preparedness

Generalized disaster preparedness training is available to interested community groups and organizations. This 90-minute presentation covers general disaster preparedness information, community resources, and local hazards information. Join us for Disaster Preparedness on a Limited Budget!

Learn how to prepare for a disaster on a limited budget. Learn what you need to do to prepare: how to make a plan, how to build a kit, and how to get involved in your own preparedness, all at little or no cost. The presentation also includes information on local hazards. The class is free and we are able to do the presentation in Spanish. Neighborhood Disaster Groups - Map Your Neighborhood (MYN)

Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) is a neighborhood-based disaster preparedness program, designed to help organized neighborhoods become prepared for disaster. The program is designed for individual neighborhoods to come together in a 90-minute session and do basic disaster planning that will assist them in the first 60 minutes of any disaster. Neighborhoods need to be self-organized and willing to meet together as a group. Neighborhoods who take this important step in disaster preparedness will be provided all necessary organizing materials and support from emergency management staff and specially trained volunteers. If your neighborhood is interested in organizing under the MYN program, contact the Emergency Preparedness Office at 253-876-1925 or email Auburn Emergency Management.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training

CERT training is comprised of 24+ hours of classroom education and hands-on practice in topics including disaster preparedness, emergency management, fire safety/suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster communication, disaster psychology, and all-hazards identification and awareness, including terrorism. Basic safety equipment is provided. Students are required to provide minimal materials, such as sturdy shoes and work gloves.

Graduates have the opportunity to become registered emergency workers with their respective cities and the State of Washington, allowing them to aid in local and regional disasters. Graduates also have the opportunity to participate in local and regional continuing education activities, including training and field exercises. Fire department and emergency management professionals from Auburn and surrounding jurisdictions, as well as the Valley Regional Fire Authority (VRFA) teach CERT classes.

Upcoming CERT Classes

(Pre-registration is required.)

• Class #24 - This class will be held Wednesday evenings, 6:30 PM-9:30 PM, May 2-June 6.  There will also be 2 Saturday morning classes on May 19, and June 9, those will be held from 8:00 AM-Noon.
• Class #25 - This class will be held 3 consecutive days, August 21, 22, 23.  Each day is 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.
• Class #26 - This class will be held Tuesday evenings, 6:30 PM-9:30 PM, October 9-November 13.  There will also be 2 Saturday morning classes on October 27, and November 17, those will be held from 8:00 AM-Noon.
