Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Department Receives Five State AwardsContact: Kristy Pachciarz, Special Events Coordinator FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 18, 2010 Auburn residents have award-winning community events right at their door step AUBURN, Wash. - March 18, 2010 - The Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Department was recognized with five awards at the annual Northwest Festivals and Events Conference, in Seaside, Ore. on March 8, a conference that is co-produced by the Washington Festivals & Events Association (WFEA) and the Oregon Festivals & Events Association. The City of Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Department was highly recognized for their efforts in coordinating the annual Petpalooza event which was held last May. Petpalooza picked up the Silver Medal Award in the Specialty Print Category. The event was also awarded a Bronze Medal Award for T-Shirt Design and a Silver Medal Award for Best Overall Promotional Campaign. The relatively new Petpalooza event won a bundle of awards at the 2009 Conference and was also awarded the Learning Resources Network (LERN)’s Best New Program at their international awards banquet in November 2008. The department added to their list of credentials with a Gold Medal Award in the Souvenir Pin/Souvenir Button Category for the 4th of July Car Show Dash Plaque. A second Gold Medal Award was earned for the inaugural ArtRageous: Artist in Action Fair, which was held in July at Les Gove Park. Auburn’s programs were showcased against other large-scale festivals such as the Bite of Seattle, Issaquah Salmon Days, Fremont Oktoberfest and others. “We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts! There are so many outstanding festivals and events in our state - this is quite an honor,” says Parks, Arts & Recreation Director Daryl Faber. “We have an amazing support system in our community. We couldn’t do it alone.” The Parks, Arts & Recreation Department would like to extend their thanks to all local community service organizations, non-profit organizations, community members, businesses and event sponsors, the City of Auburn staff and the volunteers who helped with and supported each of these events. The conference was attended by delegates from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Northern California. WFEA strives to improve the understanding, recognition and appreciation of festivals and events throughout the state, as people come together to share and celebrate their arts, heritage or special characteristics. WFEA has close to 300 member organizations ranging from municipal Parks Departments and Downtown Associations, to Chambers, convention bureaus and non-profit event companies. ABOUT AUBURN’S SPECIAL EVENTS The 3rd annual Petpalooza festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 22, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Game Farm Park, 3030 R Street SE. The festival is kicked off at 9:30 a.m. with the Dog Trot 3K/5K Fun Run (registration required). Petpalooza features an animal entertainment stage, Skyhoundz Disc Dog Championships, a petting zoo and pony rides, a noon pet parade, the ‘Unleashed’ pet contest, the National Canine Cancer Foundation’s Lure for a Cure lure course, an agility area, the K9 Kings High Flying Dog Show, kids’ face painting and inflatable rides, almost 100 vendors and much more!
Auburn’s 4th of July Festival will be held on Independence Day at Les Gove Park, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. In addition to the award-winning car show, the FREE festival features two entertainment stages, eight inflatable rides, a rock wall and euro-bungy trampolines, a trackless train, petting zoo and pony rides, bingo, bocce, free museum admission and activities, a kids’ bike parade, lazer tag, gaming stations and much more. Wristbands can be purchased for $5 for unlimited activities.
ArtRageous: Artist in Action Fair is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Les Gove Park. The 2nd annual event will feature professional artists demonstrating their techniques, sharing their enthusiasm for the arts and offering hands-on art making activities. This free fine arts festival is an introduction to a wide variety of art making in a fun family-friendly environment. It’s not too late to get involved in Auburn’s community events. The Parks, Arts & Recreation Department is currently accepting vendor applications and sponsors for Petpalooza, KidsDay and the 4th of July Festival. Registration for the 3rd annual Dog Trot 3K/5K Fun Run is also underway. Don’t wait to get involved in Auburn’s award-winning events!
