Entry Deadline for Auburn's Veterans Day Parade Oct. 8

AUBURN, Wash. – October 1, 2010 - The Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Department is currently accepting parade applications for the 45th annual Veterans Day Parade. Deadline for applications is Friday, Oct. 8. Official applications may be picked up at the a Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Office located at 910 Ninth Street SE or downloaded from the City of Auburn’s website at www.auburnwa.gov.

Applications can be faxed to 253-931-4005 or can be mailed or hand-delivered to the Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Office. Applications will be reviewed after the deadline and entries chosen will receive an official confirmation and complete event information.

The 45th annual event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6 with the parade beginning promptly at 11 a.m. The parade is limited to approximately 200 entries and will be viewed by tens of thousands. This year’s parade will honor the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Those considering completing an application are encouraged to review the Parade Rules & Regulations to ensure they meet the new criteria. For those who do not meet the revised criteria or who are looking for a patriotic way to honor our veterans, a Curb Competition has been created. ABOUT THE CITY OF AUBURN’S VETERAN’S DAY OBSERVANCE
The National Veterans Day Committee and the US Department of Defense have once again selected the City of Auburn as one of the few regional sites for Veterans Day Observance in 2010. The mile-long parade includes military marching units and vehicles, veteran service organizations, marching bands, honor guards, drill teams, community and scouting groups, as well as floats, antique cars, community groups and more. The official start of the parade is Main Street and E Street NE. The parade will proceed west on Main Street to A Street NW.

Other events related to the Veterans Day celebration in Auburn include the American Legion Breakfast, a Remembrance Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, a Static Display & Exhibit Showcase on Division Street, a Noon Lions Luncheon, the state’s largest marching band competition and much more.

Back this year is the Vietnam Veterans Traveling Wall exhibit. This half-scale replica of the Washington, DC-based Vietnam Memorial Wall will be open 24 hours a day from November 4 thru Sunday, November 7. This unforgettable exhibit pays tribute to the men and women who have served in the US Armed Forces during the Vietnam conflict. The traveling wall contains 58,249 names of those killed or missing in action from the conflict. The exhibit includes a 53’ museum and computers with databases available to help locate names and is open for all ages.
