Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Courses Scheduled in Auburn

AUBURN, Wash. - July 6, 2011 - The City of Auburn Emergency Management Office, in conjunction with the White River Valley Citizen Corps Council and the Valley Regional Fire Authority, is offering three Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training courses for area residents. The three classses are scheduled for:

  • Aug. 23-25 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. all three days. The class is held in downtown Auburn.
  • Thursdays, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27 and Nov. 3 and 10 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays, Oct. 22 and Nov. 12 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • The third is restricted to high school students in the Auburn School District and will be offered on Monday PLC days beginning Oct. 3 and will continue through the school year. (View 2011-12 PLC Calendar) and will be held at Auburn High School located at 800 4th St. NE. This is the second all high-school course to be offered in Auburn.

Class members will be required to provide some basic equipment, such as sturdy shoes or boots and work gloves. Other necessary supplies and equipment will be provided. A complete list of required equipment will be provided upon registration.

ABOUT CERT TRAINING
CERT training is comprised of 24 hours of classroom education and hands-on practice in topics including disaster preparedness, emergency management, fire safety / suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster communication, disaster psychology, and all-hazards identification and awareness. Both clock hours (for teachers) and continuing education units are available for individual who successfully complete the course.

Graduates have the opportunity to become registered emergency workers with their respective cities and the State of Washington, allowing them to aid in local and regional disasters. Graduates also have the opportunity to participate in local and regional continuing education activities, including training and field exercises. Courses are taught by fire department and emergency management professionals from the cities of Auburn and Pacific, as well as the Valley Regional Fire Authority.
