AUBURN, Wash. - March 23, 2011 - Alfred Hitchcock’s own The 39 Steps will be presented Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Auburn Avenue Theater as part of Auburn’s BRAVO Performing Arts Series as prelude to the April 23 Broadway stage play that will take place at the Auburn Performing Arts Center.

Considered one of the best films of Hitchcock’s early period, The 39 Steps is based loosely on the 1915 adventure novel of the same name by John Buchan. The story follows Richard Hannay as he finds himself in the middle of a secret spy war. With the death of one professed spy in his own London home, Hannay takes it upon himself to finish her mission, tell a contact of “the 39 Steps” (whatever they are).

The 39 Steps stars Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll, Lucie Mannheim and Godfrey Tearle and was originally released in 1935. The film is ranked fourth on the British Film Institute’s Top British Films of the 20th Century. A total of four films have been produced from the book, with a fifth in the works, as well as an Orson Welles audio adaptation. Hitchcock’s film remains the best reviewed.

In 2006, a comic theatrical adaptation by Patrick Barlow based on Hitchcock’s 39 Steps opened in London. A Broadway run of the show garnered the production six Tony Award nominations and two wins.

The City of Auburn BRAVO Performing Arts Series includes music, dance, and theater performances for all ages throughout the year.
