Nine new Autumn Blaze Maple Trees to be planted at Pioneer CemeteryFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 5, 2011 Contact: AUBURN, Wash. – January 5, 2011 – Over the next month, an authorized contractor will be removing the seven diseased and dead Maple trees located at Pioneer Cemetery and replacing the trees with Autumn Maple Trees. Over the past several years the existing Maple trees have become diseased or have died due to age and previous improper trimming techniques. Both the City Arborist and the City’s Risk Manager recommend removing the remaining seven trees at Pioneer Cemetery and replacing them with new trees. The existing trees will be replaced with nine new Autumn Blaze Maple Trees, five along Auburn Way North and four along the parking lot. The Autumn Blaze Maple is a crossbreed of a Red Maple and a Sugar Maple. It was voted 2004 Urban Tree of the Year by The Society of Municipal Arborists. The trees are known for their superior fall color, unexcelled growth rates and they adapt well to a wide range of climate and soil conditions. They will reach a mature height of 50 feet with a spread of 35 feet. Staff recommends planting nine trees. The tree removal and tree planting will take place in late January or early February of 2011 to help ensure success of the tree replacement project and decrease the need for manual watering. This project is funded in the 2011 Parks Capital Budget Auburn is recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a TREE CITY USA, which recognizes communities that effectively manage their urban forest and meet four TREE CITY USA standards. The standards including having a tree governing body; maintaining a comprehensive community forestry program that spends at least $2 per capita on the urban forest; maintaining a tree care ordinance; and holding an annual celebration related to Arbor Day.
