AUBURN, Wash. — January 4, 2011 - Researchers and history buffs interested in Washington state’s White River Valley region can turn to improved functionality on the White River Valley Museum website, including the ability to search the museum's archival collection of rare books, scrapbooks, documents, maps, sheet music, journals, historic correspondence and more.

The website improvements, supported by 4Culture, are part of a long-term project to inventory and catalog the museum's archive collection and share it with the public.

"We have worked all last summer and this past summer and fall, and we're about half way through making our archives searchable and more easily accessible," said museum director Patricia Cosgrove.

Archives specialist Dana Brownfield was hired to complete the work.

"This is one chapter of a larger project to inventory 10 key sections of the museum's archives, photograph significant pieces and make them available on the museum's website," Brownfield said.

The museum continually researches history of the White River Valley and each year adds more items to its archives. By doing this work, the museum is learning exactly what historic documents are in inventory and making them available to the public.

"We're able to scan items and send them to researchers and history buffs all over the world," Brownfield said.

To browse the archives entered to date, visit www.wrvmuseum.org and click on "Primary Documents" in the left-hand navigation. You can then search 10 topics: Women; Coast Salish People; Youth and Education; Genealogy and Immigration; Music, Arts and Leisure; Crime, Law and Firefighting; Railroad and Industry; Agriculture; Fraternities and Labor Unions; and World Wars I and II.
