White River Valley Museum, Mary Olson Farm Receive $39,100 in Grants, Donations

AUBURN, Wash. - May 26, 2011 - The White River Valley Museum and Mary Olson Farm have received grants and donations totaling $39,100. The funds will be applied toward award-winning educational programs, exhibits and final restoration efforts at the farm.

The grants received are from 4Culture, the cultural services agency for King County, and total $29,000 to fund:

  • $18,00 in sustained support for 2012 
  • $6,000 in landmarks rehabilitation for the Weaving House located at Mary Olson Farm 
  • $5,000 toward a long-term project to inventory and catalog the museum's archive collection and share it with the public

Contributions for exhibit and event sponsorships, restoration efforts at Mary Olson Farm, and free Wednesdays at the White River Valley Museum total $10,100:

  • $2,500 from Mountain View Cemetery to sponsor the upcoming exhibit "DEAD: Unearthing the Shift in Funerary Practices from Home to Mortuary," on display Aug. 13 to Nov. 17. The unique exhibit will feature Victorian funerary artifacts that tell the story of handling a death at home, caring for and viewing of the body, mourning rituals and customs, and funeral practices. 
  • $2,000 from Station Bistro to sponsor the 2011 Hops & Crops Harvest Festival at Mary Olson Farm, taking place on Sept. 24. 
  • $1,300 from the Auburn Rotary to support Mary Olson Farm 

$500 from each of these donors provides one month of free Wednesdays at the museum:

ABOUT THE WHITE RIVER VALLEY MUSEUM
The White River Valley Museum is a partnership with the City of Auburn and combines history and culture to create an exciting and educational experience for visitors. Museum collections focus on Puget Sound history, Northwest Indian culture, Japanese immigration and the Northern Pacific Railroad

The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. and is located at 918 H St. S.E. in Auburn. Regular admission is $2 adults, $1 seniors and children. Admission is free on Wednesdays and the fourth Sunday of the month. Call 253-288-7433 or visit www.wrvmuseum.org for event information.

ABOUT MARY OLSON FARM
The White River Valley Museum has worked with the City of Auburn for more than 15 years to restore Mary Olson Farm, the best preserved historic subsistence farm in King County. The farm is a King County Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Significant features include an 1897 barn, a 1902 farmhouse, a century-old orchard and two salmon runs in Olson Creek. The grand opening for Mary Olson Farm is June 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will operate as a living history and environmental learning site.
