Auburn Bucking Commercial Trend

Openings, expansions create economic boon

AUBURN, Wash. - February 28, 2011 - Commercial building construction and real estate rentals may be down nationwide, but Auburn businesses are bucking national trends.

Leading the way is American Tire DistributorsExternal link, which will open its flagship Washington facility next month at the Auburn 18 industrial park near the SuperMall.

The 126,306-square-foot facility, at 521 8th ST SW, is only the second ATD in the Pacific Northwest, and one of 89 servicing 34 states.

The deal will bring 20 jobs and countless new customers into the area. It also will bring the 285,000-square-foot industrial park to 100 percent occupancy.

Biking benefits

Wheels are also the focus of Cycle TherapyExternal link, which recently opened a second bike sales and service store at 104 E Main ST in downtown Auburn.

Co-owned by Ric Hutchens and Bob Smith, the store will carry a variety of bikes and bike products from cycling brands such as Kona, Raleigh, Redline, Niner, and Diamondback. Santa Cruz Mountain Bikes and Seven Cycles will also be represented.

"I first became passionate about cycling here," said Hutchens, an Auburn native. "For me, cycling is a way of life that is fun, healthy, and good for the environment. I'm excited to share my knowledge, enthusiasm, and love of this activity with the people of this community."

To set up shop, Smith said that the local Bicycle Task Force was extremely helpful, as were city officials.

"Auburn offers a great opportunity for our business because of its network of bicycle trails and its excellent connections to public transportation," he said.

Indeed, one resident thrilled to have Cycle Therapy in downtown Auburn is the city's mayor, Pete Lewis.

"Bob and Ric's decision to locate in downtown Auburn is a great addition to our business mix," he said. "Plus, their store's proximity to the Interurban Trail will be an added benefit for the many riders who use this important north-south track for commuting and recreation."

Spurring energy savings

In addition to pedal power, energy-efficiency is also expanding in Auburn. 3 Phase Energy Systems IncExternal link, which develops solutions to address the needs of commercial and industrial energy users, recently signed a distribution agreement with Amada America, a leading manufacturer of metal fabrication systems and machines.

Through the agreement, both companies boost the skills and range of their sales forces.

"Our products are proprietary devices that create energy from the exhaust of industrial air-handling machinery," said 3 Phase President and CEO Pete Agtuca. "Machines running with our system have proven to be as much as 20 percent more energy-efficient. Our goal is to change the way the world thinks about exhaust."

3 Phase Energy Systems is at 3205 C ST NE, and has been in business since 2007. Headquartered in Buena Park, Calif., Amada America is a subsidiary of Amada Co., a global leader in the engineering and manufacturing of advanced metalworking machinery.
