Auburn Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Graduates 13 New Members

AUBURN, Wash. - August 29, 2011 - The City of Auburn Emergency Management Office is pleased to announce the addition of 13 new members to the area’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), bringing the total number of graduates in the local program to 367. The 13 new members graduated from the area’s 20th CERT course which included 3 intensive days of training. The training culminated in a hands-on practical exercise simulating an earthquake.

Graduates of the class included: David Conrad, Melanie Conrad, Darlene Larson, Cheryl Marshall, Curtis Oliver, Senator Pam Roach, Sandi Tanco, Hoang Tran, James Zeller, all of Auburn. Deric Watkins of Bonney Lake, Pam Bledsoe and Chris Partman of Tukwila, and Ryan Cantwell of Maple Valley.

The next CERT class is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Oct. 6, running for 6 consecutive Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:30 p.m., plus two Saturday mornings. Space is still available, though pre-registration is required.

The City is also offering its second High School CERT class to students in the Auburn School District. This class will be held on PLC Mondays from 8- 9 a.m. at Auburn High School. All high school students in the Auburn School District may attend and pre-registration is required. ABOUT CERT TRAINING
CERT training is comprised of 24+ hours of classroom education and hands-on practice in topics including disaster preparedness, emergency management, fire safety / suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster communication, disaster psychology, and all-hazards identification and awareness.

Graduates have the opportunity to become registered emergency workers with their respective cities and the State of Washington, allowing them to aid in local and regional disasters. Graduates also have the opportunity to participate in local and regional continuing education activities, including training and field exercises. Courses are sponsored by the White River Valley Citizen Corps Council and taught by fire and emergency management professionals from the cities of Auburn, Pacific, and the Valley Regional Fire Authority.
