Ryan NaborsAUBURN, Wash. – October 6, 2011 – The City of Auburn is proud to announce Washington State Department Commander Ryan Nabors of Olympia as the 2011 Auburn Veterans Day Parade Grand Marshal. Nabors, a veteran who served in the U.S. Coast Guard, is a life member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Olympia Chapter 41. Auburn's Veterans Day Parade will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Nabors served in the Coast Guard from 1995 through 1999. While serving onboard the Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast, he sustained injuries conducting search and rescue operations, and law enforcement patrols. His service in the Coast Guard included operations in the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea and counter drug operations in Mexico and off the California coast.

Following his military service, Nabors attended Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland Wash., earning a Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies. He earned his Master’s degree in international relations with a concentration in national security affairs at Troy University. He also recently completed a master’s certificate in organizational leadership.

Nabors has served in a variety of Chapter positions including Chapter Commander, Adjutant and Service Officer. Honors include being named Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs Service Officer of the Year in 2010. He was also recognized as the Unsung Hero by the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans in 2010. He was appointed by the Governor of Washington to the Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee and the Governor’s Disability Issues and Employment Committee.

The 46th annual event pays special tribute to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). The 1.2 million-member DAV is a non-profit 501(c)(4) charity dedicated to building better lives for America’s disabled veterans and their families. The DAV was founded in 1920 by disabled veterans returning from World War I to represent their unique interests. In 1932, the DAV was congressionally chartered as the official voice of the nation’s wartime disabled veterans.

The National Veterans Day Committee and the US Department of Defense have once again selected the City of Auburn as one of the few Regional Sites for Veterans Day Observance in 2011. The focal point of the day-long activities is the mile-long parade, which includes military units, veteran service organizations, marching bands, honor guards, drill teams, community and scouting groups, as well as floats, antique cars, community groups and more. The official start of the parade is Main St. and E Street NE and will proceed west on Main St. to A St. NW and begin at 11 a.m.

Auburn’s Veterans Day Observance includes an American Legion breakfast, a Remembrance Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, a Static Display & Exhibit Showcase on Division Street, a military fly-over, an Auburn Noon Lions Luncheon, the state’s largest marching band competition and more.
