City of Auburn Urban Tree Board offers Winter Tree Care Tips

Snow on treesAUBURN, Wash. - December 9, 2011 - The Auburn Urban Tree Board would like to inform residents about the care and maintenance of your trees during the winter months. The best time to prune fruit trees is in the winter and is also the best time to plant trees. The normal rainfall is healthy for a new tree, and the soil is a natural insulator for a new tree.

Other tips for tree care and safety are:

  • Safely remove dead or weak limbs, and prune crossing branches.
  • Trim back overhanging limbs near gutters, chimneys, and power and cable lines.
  • Wait until spring for major pruning using good pruning practices. Consider hiring a Certified Arborist to ensure the job is done safely and correctly.
  • Place 2-4” of mulch around base of tree but not touching the trunk. This can be composted leaves or wood chips (but not grass clippings). The micro-organisms in mulch provide much needed nutrients and provides moisture and temperature control.
  • Gently shake off snow from limbs during heavy snowfall.
