Update February 17, 2012
(An update to the people from Mayor Pete Lewis)

The Best Chocolate in the Northwest

In last Saturday's Seattle Times there was an article about someone taking a trip to Spain and a visit to a Chocolate factory.

Did You Know we have a world renowned Chocolatier right here in Auburn and many of you drive by it every day?

Gosanko's Chocolate's is on A Street right next to Chase Bank behind Safeway. Ronnie Roberts is one of the few accredited Chocolatiers in the United States and what he can do with the three thousand pounds of chocolate he cooks every day is amazing, go see.

Daughters of the American Revolution

Saturday was DAR in Auburn at the Free Methodist Church just off East Main Street as the Daughters of the American Revolution Lakota Chapter held their 31st Annual Recognition and Anniversary Tea Ceremony. These ladies are truly amazing and each year they give out awards and scholarships to young men and women in our community.

They did note however that they couldn’t give out a Good Citizen Cash Prize award this year for any Auburn student as the middle and high schools had declined to participate.

Did You Know the Auburn North Shopping Center has some great retail bargains? Go uptown for shopping, stop in at Quick Pick or Chicago Willey's and then take a drive down the biggest and I know the best group of car dealers in the Northwest.

Downtown is Busy

Kathy and I went downtown on Sunday and oh my, the cars downtown. The Bistro, Zolas, Oddfellas and Rainbow were all full as well as Sunbreak. Life is coming back into downtown. I really do like to see the downtown businesses working together. It is so important that we have a united and positive attitude as we come out of this recession.

Did You Know that Auburn is number 15 in the cities of the United States for enrollment and use of the FREE  National League of Cities Prescription Discount Program per their January 2012 Report? You can print out a free card from our website to take wherever in Auburn you go to get your prescriptions filled.

Partnership Community

We are a city used to working in partnership with others. I have talked about that before on a basic level but it really hit home this week.

Council Members and I worked with a large number of our partnerships in just one ten day period of time.

I've been in touch with King County Executive Dow Constantine and his staff working on such partnerships as the county-wide 911 replacement system (supplier doesn't make the equipment anymore) and the King County Aerospace Alliance where our Deputy Mayor Nancy Backus represented us and was seen on TV while Council Members Peloza and Partridge working on trash and courts and police.

During the same week Deputy Mayor Backus and Council Member Wagner and I attended the Board of Governance meeting for The Valley Regional Fire Authority for fire and emergency medical protection for an area which includes the cities of Algona, Auburn and Pacific.

Now I'd been working with our Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy on Pierce County's new Flood Control District. We also see each other at the four county Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board where I represent us and Suburban Cities and she is the chair of the committee.

Council Member Rich Wagner was appointed to the Pierce County Transit Committee on Boundaries as well as his appointment to the Pierce County Regional Council and the county's transportation group or RAMP with Councilmember Largo Wales as your alternate on that important transportation committee.

While they were working the Pierce County side of the border Council member Bill Peloza was representing us at the South King County Transportation Board.

While that was going on I’d already met with our King County Council member Pete Von Reichbauer who chairs the King County Regional Policy Committee where I am the vice-chair.

King County Council member Pete Von Reichbauer is Auburn’s representative to the Sound Transit Board working for our sorely needed transit garage promised so long ago. I will continue to update you on our garage.

In that same week I met with our Pierce County Council member Joyce McDonald who came with a Pierce County TV crew to do a piece on our Pierce County residents.

During all of that there were several meetings with the Board of Trustees for Green River Community College.

While I was at Green River Council member John Holman went as my alternate to the King County School Siting Task Force.

In the midst of that I had been to Washington DC and back to meet with our State Director of Veteran Affairs, Under Secretary of Veteran Affairs to bring more services for veterans to Auburn where the need is so great. All of the veteran information ties back in to Green River Community College, our human service needs and our partnerships with the cities of Algona and Pacific.

Biggest in the United States

Speaking of Arts and Entertainment in Auburn something special happened again on Thursday night with the Scholarship Awards for the Miss Auburn Program and the Miss Auburn Outstanding Teen.

You might have heard me say before that this little town of ours has the largest local program of Miss America in the entire country not in numbers of contestants but in direct scholarship dollars awarded to the contestants. Before we could say that our Program was larger than all of the other city programs and most states.

Between the Miss Auburn and Outstanding Teen Program all of us in this little city with the biggest heart awarded over $70,000 in scholarships and with additional grants over $78,000.

I love this town and its incredible care for its people. We are all a part of a place that every single day is caring and improving and proving to the world around that we will always be More Than They Imagined!
