Nancy Backus
Nancy (Karr) Backus was first appointed to the Auburn City Council on July 7, 2003, elected to serve a two year term from 2004 to 2005, and then re-elected to her second term in 2006. Backus serves as Vice Chair of Planning and Community Development and is Chair of the Finance Committee. In addition, Nancy has served on King County Growth Management Planning Council and has been on the National League of Cities (NLC) Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations (FAIR) Policy Committee for the last 3 years. She has served the Auburn community and citizens for the past 29 years as President of the Miss Auburn Scholarship Program, fundraiser for several local organizations and is the Co-President of the Washington Elementary School PTA. She has also been president and treasurer of the Washington State Association of Local Miss America Programs, and a member of the Auburn King County Library System Board. Backus also volunteers in her daughter’s elementary school classroom whenever time permits. She received the Soroptimist International of Auburn “Women Helping Women” award in 2002. She is a proud 2007 graduate of the Leadership Institute of South Puget Sound and also a recent graduate of the Dale Carnegie Leadership Advantage course where she was selected by her fellow students to receive “The Human Principles in Action” award. Nancy received her Associate of Arts degree from Green River Community College, and has a Bachelor or Science degree in Accounting. She is a 19-year employee of The Boeing Company and is a financial accounting manager for the company’s Commercial Airplane Group.
