Automobiles are the most common mode transportation; however, the street system also handles trucks, buses and bicycles. It connects travelers to the commuter train, freeway and other cities throughout the region and world.

To understand the City's transportation system, understanding a few key terms is helpful.

  • Principal Arterials: Roads moving traffic along corridors with a high density of commercial and industrial activities. Terminal Park neighborhood has two principal arterials: Auburn Way South and A Street SE Auburn Way South is the main route to Enumclaw. A Street SE connects to Pacific and Sumner.
  • Minor Arterials: Roads linking larger activity centers to collector and local road systems. The Terminal Park Neighborhood has two minor arterials: 12th Street SE and 17th Street SE.
  • Collector Arterials: Roads linking local streets to arterials. They emphasize local traffic circulation within a neighborhood. F Street SE is a designated collector arterial in the Terminal Park neighborhood.
  • Truck Routes: Truck routes are designated by Ordinance 9.12. They serve to move freight through and around town. Terminal Park has several east-to-west truck routes: 6th Street SE, 12th Street SE, 17th Street SE and A Street SE.
  • Local Streets: Roads linking residents to higher level road systems and activity centers. Service to through traffic movement is deliberately discouraged.
  • Bike Paths: Bike Path improvements typically include paved shoulders and painted lines separating the bicycle path from the road lane. Recently bike paths were installed on 12th Street SE and 17th Street SE

Finally, another key term is – Level of Service (LOS). LOS is also commonly called "Length of Stay" for it measures the perception of motorist in terms of speed, travel time, traffic interruptions and delays. Levels of service are given letter designations from "A" to "F" with LOS "A" representing the best operating conditions and LOS "F" representing the worst. These designations apply primarily to principal arterials. The level of service for A Street SE and Auburn Way South is "C" which means a reasonable, stable flow of traffic.
