1. Where can I do community service to pay off my fines and probation fees?

If your sentence in Auburn Municipal Court includes a fine, you will usually have the opportunity to perform Community Service instead of paying your fine with money. These rules apply when you choose Community Service:

  • You must choose a NON-PROFIT organization for your community service hours; it is not up to the court or probation to provide you with a list of places. Examples include: Churches, YMCA, schools, Food Banks, Children’s Home Society, The Goodwill, etc. To find phone numbers for the above references, you can look in the yellow pages under “Social Service Organizations.” The agency DOES NOT have to be in Auburn.
  • When you complete your hours, the agency of your choice must write to the court a short statement on THEIR LETTERHEAD STATIONARY stating how many hours have been completed. An employee of the organization must sign it and add a phone number for reference. Also, be sure your CASE NUMBER is included so your case gets proper credit. You must turn your hours in each month to the front counter at Auburn Municipal Court. If your hours are not turned in, your case may end up in collections.
  • You will earn $7.00 credit for each hour of community service performed.
  • If you have further questions, please call the Court Staff at 253-931-3076.

3. Alcoholics Anonymous questions

When do I have to start attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings?

Meeting attendance is required starting on the day of your sentence. DO NOT wait until your probation appointment, or wait until you are in treatment.

Where do I attend AA meetings?

Call 206-587-2838 or 206-722-3700 for locations nearest you. In Pierce County call 253-474-8897. Or go to www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.

Why are phone numbers required on the AA log?

You must provide VERIFIABLE AA logs, and the phone numbers are references for random checks.

4. What is ignition interlock and where do I get it?

An ignition interlock is a breath analyzer, which is wired into the vehicle’s ignition and prevents the driver from starting the vehicle if he or she has consumed any alcohol. The device is about the size of a cellular phone with a curly cord that disappears under the dash. Five companies have been approved by the Washington State Patrol to supply interlocks. Please check our Resources Guide.

Am I required to have one installed?

No, you can choose not to drive at all for the length of time an interlock is required.

Can I drive work vehicles without an ignition interlock?

No, unless given special permission by the judge, which must be requested through a hearing.
