Volunteer servicesVolunteer Services is set up to support and assist the Auburn Police Department in any activity not requiring a commissioned officer. Volunteer ActivitiesCitizens On Patrol (COP)The Citizens On Patrol is the heart of the Volunteer Program. As a COP, you will learn the proper operation of the city vehicles, cell phones, radios, radar units, and other devices. You will be trained on the paperwork to support those functions and work closely with the Community Program Officers, other department personnel and other volunteers. As a COP you will participate in pairs or groups in Witness Subpoena Program, Disabled Parking Citations, Park & Ride and City Park Patrol, Extra Neighborhood Patrol, Vacation House Checks, Officer Assistance, and Neighborhood Speed watch utilizing the radar trailer or radar gun. EventsThe Volunteers are present at several throughout the year. Some of these include Bike Rodeo, Kids Day at Game Farm Park, Good Old Days, Auburn Police Officers Association Golf Tournament, and other events as requested. ChalkingAssist the Parking Enforcement Officer by chalking tires of vehicles utilizing city parking lots. BlockwatchAssist Community Program Officers as they schedule, coordinate and facilitate neighborhood meetings designed to have neighbors watching out for neighbors. Once a Blockwatch has been established, the city provides appropriate signs. ProjectsProvide assistance to various units and individuals within the department. This may require specific skills and will be of both a short and long term nature. Public RelationsThe Volunteers will provide a speaker to discuss the various aspects of the program. Speakers are designated by Community Program Officers. Please call 253-288-3147 to arrange for a speaker. Additional InformationVacation House ChecksIf you are planning to be away for a week or two, why not contact the Police Department for this free, short term (maximum two weeks) program? Come to the lobby of the Auburn Police Department and complete the request card. Volunteers will perform periodic checks of your residence during your absence. You will need to provide your emergency contact information such as a relative or neighbor. To request this, please complete this form. Disabled Parking CitationsMembers of the Auburn Police Volunteers are authorized by the Chief of Police to issue disabled parking citations. There is a $250 fine for illegally parking in a disabled parking spot in Auburn. Extra PatrolsThe Volunteers can provide extra patrols in your neighborhood. If you feel the presence of a volunteer vehicle would act as a deterrent in your neighborhood, please come to the lobby to complete a request form or call the Volunteer Office (see below) to make arrangements for an extra patrol or request the service online. Neighborhood Speed WatchOne of the most consistent complaints received by the Police Department is that of vehicles speeding through residential neighborhoods. Neighborhood Speed Watch is a public awareness program in which residents can take an active role in slowing down traffic on their street. Interested Citizens should call the Volunteer Office (see below) or come to the lobby of the Police Department to complete the request form. Membership MeetingsThe Auburn Police Volunteers hold monthly meetings, normally the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.Please call the Volunteer Office for more information. How To Become A VolunteerThe first step is to request a volunteer application. When the application has been completed and returned, it is reviewed by the Community Program Officers. All volunteers submit to a criminal background check, including sex offenses. A panel consisting the Administrative Services Sgt., Community Program Officer and a Volunteer conduct a personal interview and references are checked. When this process is complete an ID badge is issued and training begins. It’s an opportunity to serve the community.
