July 2 - 6, 2018:  Garbage, recycle and compostables services will be on the NORMAL collection schedule (no delays). Please have your containers out for collection by 7:00 AM on your collection day.

Missed Collections

Missed collections due to late container set-out, locked gates/enclosures, or use of customer's own lock on container(s) is not considered a missed collection and will incur a Return Trip Fee of $19.03 per material - see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)


WM Garbage CartGARBAGE COLLECTION

If you own property within the Auburn city limits Waste Management service area, per City Code, you are required to have a minimum garbage service level (10-gallons) whether the service is utilized or not. Property Owners must provide adequate garbage service level(s) for each occupied unit.

Guidelines:

  • Single Unit Building - Garbage services cannot be split apart separately from utility accounts that bill for water, sewer and/or storm services. 
  • Multiple Unit Buildings - Property Owner can submit a Tenant Release form for each unit to have an individual garbage service account. At least one unit must have garbage service on the property.

Containers & Rates:

Solid Waste Rates (PDF) vary depending on the container size and pick up frequency. When you sign up for service, the City will provide a 35-gallon garbage cart (default size).

Container sizes available - Garbage Container Sizes.

  • Can with loose lid (grey):  10-gallon
  • Cart with wheels (green):  20-gallon cart (35 gallon cart with fixed black insert), 35-gallon, 64-gallon, or 96-gallon.
  • Front-load, metal dumpster with lids (green):  1-yard, 1.5-yard, 2-yard, 3-yard, 4-yard, 6-yard or 8-yard; 1 to 4-yard dumpsters have wheels.
  • Roll-off metal box w/open-top (green): 20-yard, 30-yard or 40-yard; Available up request with screen lid (no additional cost) or closed-top (fee applies).
  • Compactors:  Waste Management can haul and empty customers own compactors for a fee. Sizes: 1 to 6-yard or 8 to 40-yard.
  • Locks from Waste Management available at no additional cost for front-load dumpsters or roll-off boxes with screen lid or closed-tops.
  • Temporary Containers for 60-day use of less:  See Solid Waste Rates (PDF)   
    • Front-load metal dumpsters w/lids (green): *2-yard, *4-yard, or 6-yard. *With wheels.
    • Roll-off metal box w/open top (green): 20-yard, 30-yard, or 40-yard.

Collection:

Frequency - The City's contracted hauler, Waste Management, shall collect, remove and dispose of all solid waste from businesses in the city at least once each week.

  • Cans or carts are collected one time per week.
  • Front-load and roll-off box containers may be collected up to 5 times a week. See Solid Waste Rates (PDF).

Collection Day - Call Waste Management directly (1-800-592-9995) to determine your collection day.

Container Set-out & Placement -

  • Carts must be at the curbside and/or dumpsters available on property for collection by 6:00 AM on collection day.
  • Place 2 feet apart from other containers and 5 feet from any structure with lid facing street.
  • Place containers out in such a way that does not restrict the reasonable and safe use of the street, sidewalk, or bicycle lanes by pedestrians, bicyclists, and automobiles.
  • Enclosures - Containers that need to be rolled out from an enclosure more than 5 feet to be emptied will incur a "Roll-out Fee", See Solid Waste Rates (PDF) for fee.
  • Remove containers from public property no later than 24 hours after your collection day.

Extra Garbage - Garbage collected in excess of your current monthly service (as listed on your account) will incur extra charges of $11.22 per container/box or bag (up to 32-gallons by volume) per pick up, or $32.84 per front-load dumpster or roll-off box (up to 1 cubic yard) per pickup. Lid must be closed on container.   

  • Put extra garbage is securely tied plastic bags or 32-gallon can w/lid and handles (65 lb. limit) or box (2' x 3' x 2' limit) and place next to garbage cart. Extra garbage must be labeled "Garbage".

Extra Pickup - To schedule an extra pickup call the City of Auburn Utility Department at 253-931-3038. Extra Garbage and Return Trip fees apply, see Solid Waste Rates (PDF).

Materials Accepted:

Garbage ONLY, NO Yard waste and *hazardous waste is not accepted in the garbage.

WM Recycle CartRECYCLE COLLECTION

Commercial Businesses may choose to, but are not required to utilize City contracted Waste Management Commingled Recycling Program services.

FREE site visits to access waste reduction and recycling needs, recycle guidelines, posters, signage, staff training and walk-through waste audits are available to help your recycling program be successful. Containers:

As a part of basic Waste Management garbage collection services, recycling is no additional cost as long as the recycling container size is within 150% of the customer's garbage collection container size. For example, a customer with a 2-yard garbage container would be provided up to a 3-yard recycling container capacity for no charge.   • Carts with wheels (blue):  35-gallon, 64-gallon, or 96-gallon
  • Front-load, metal dumpster with lids (blue):  1-yard, 1.5-yard, 2-yard, 3-yard, 4-yard, 6-yard or 8 yard; 1 through 4-yard dumpsters have wheels.
  • Roll-off containers:  Not available through the City. Please call Waste Management directly at 1-800-592-9995 for availability and pricing (this service would be an additional charge).
  • Locks from Waste Management available at no additional charge for front-load dumpsters.

Extra Recycle - There is NO additional charge for collection of recyclables IF the amount does not exceed the 150% the size of the garbage container. Any additional recycling beyond the 150% recycling service  may be fee-based as negotiated between the customer and Waste Management. Recycling collection in excess of your current monthly service level (as listed on your account) is charged according to the additional amount picked up, (35-gallon through 8-cubic yard containers will be charged according to container size).

  • Put extra recycle in a 32-gallon can w/lid and handles (65 lb. limit) or box (2' x 3' x 2' limit) and place next to recycle cart. Extra recycle must be labeled "Recycle". Do not use plastic bags or each bags will be charged as extra garbage.

Extra Pickup - A request to pickup extra recycling within the 150% amount (as listed above) on a non-regular collection day will incur a Return Trip Fee of $19.03, see Solid Waste Rates (PDF). To schedule an additional pickup the Property owner or Manager must call the City of Auburn Utilities Department at 253-931-3038.

Materials Accepted:

Clean, loose recyclables ONLY. NO garbage, yard waste, hazardous waste or shredded paper is accepted in recycle. NO plastic bags. Recycle plastic bags at the grocery store. For more information visit the Waste Management website.

WM Compostables CartCOMPOSTABLES COLLECTION 

Compostables services (yard waste, food & food-soiled paper) is available for a monthly charge. City Code 8.08.120 prohibits yard waste from being mixed with garbage. Garbage containers containing yard waste and garbage mixed together will not be picked up.

Containers, Rates & Services:

Compostables rates (PDF) vary depending on the size of container. Compostables service available on a subscription bases. NOTE:  Compostables restart fee - If compostables service is canceled and restarted within 7 months a restart fee of $25.00 will be charged. When you sign up for yard waste service the City supplies a (grey) cart.

Container sizes available include:

  • Cart with wheels (grey):  35-gallon, 64-gallon, or 96-gallon.
  • Front-load, metal dumpster with lids (green):  1-yard or 2-yard .
  • Locks from Waste Management available at no additional cost for front-load dumpsters.

Cart cleaning/deodorizing - Waste Management will clean and deodorize your compostables container for a fee of $15.00 per container. Please call the City of Auburn Utilities Department at 253-931-3038 to request this service.

Collection:

Extra Yard Waste - Compostables collected in excess of your current monthly service level (as listed on your account) will incur extra charges of $3.32 for each extra unit (up to 32-gallon volume can/yard debris paper bag/box) or $37.23 for each extra yard (up to 1-yard) per pickup. Lid must be closed on the container. 

  • Put extra yard debris (NO food) in 32-gallon can with lid and handles (65 lb. limit), heavy paper bags, or bundles (4 foot by 2 foot limit), and place next to the gray compostables cart. 
    NO plastic bags or food in extra yard waste containers.

Extra Pickup - A request to pickup extra yard waste on a non-regular collection day will incur a Return Trip Fee:  Carts $19.03, 1-yard $34.31, or 2-yard $57.42.

Materials Accepted:

Includes organic material from your yard, (leaves, grass, and branches under 3 inches in diameter by 3 feet long), and shredded paper (in paper bag). Compostables collection also includes food scraps and food-soiled paper. No sod, dirt, rocks, concrete, lumber or plastic bags.
