Call Waste Management directly at 1-800-592-9995 within 24 hours to request a Courtesy Return Trip. Missed collections due to locked gates/enclosures/customer's own lock on container(s) is not considered a missed collection and will incur a Return Trip Fee (see Solid Waste Rates link below for fees).
If you have a property within the City of Auburn's Waste Management garbage service area, you are required to have City Garbage service. The charges/fees set by the City shall be applied whether or not the service is utilized. All occupied units are required to have minimum or adequate service.
Containers & Rates
Solid Waste Rates (PDF) vary depending on container size and pick up frequency. The smaller your container size, the less you pay. Many different (green) container sizes are available for your property's needs. Container sizes include:
- 10 gallon can (grey can with lid)
- 20 gallon cart (35 gallon cart with black insert)
- 35 gallon cart
- 64 gallon cart
- 96 gallon cart
- 1 YD - 8 YD containers (dumpster); 1 - 4 YD available with wheels
- 20 YD, 30 YD or 40 YD roll-off containers

The City's contracted hauler, Waste Management, shall collect, remove and dispose of all solid waste from businesses in the city at least once each week. Call Waste Management directly to determine your collection day. Garbage must be set out for collection by 6:00 AM on collection day. For missed collections, call Waste Management directly within 24 hours at 1-800-592-9995.
Extra Garbage Pickups
Extra garbage set out for collection above your normal service level will incur extra garbage charges (see Solid Waste Rates above for charges). To schedule additional pickups call the City of Auburn Utilities Department at 253-931-3038. Example of Extra Garbage
If the amount of garbage you generate exceeds your current container, consider increasing your service level or consider utilizing the City's Commingled Recycling Program (see Recycling below).
Setting up Service
To set up service the property manager or owner must call the City of Auburn Utilities Department at 253-931-3038.
Commercial Businesses may choose to, but are not required to utilize City contracted Waste Management Commingled Recycling Program services.
FREE site visits to access waste reduction and recycling needs, recycle guidelines, posters, signage, staff training and walk-through waste audits are available to help your recycling program be successful. Containers & Rates
As a part of basic Waste Management garbage collection services, recycling is no additional cost as long as the recycling container size is within 150% of the customer's garbage collection container size. For example, a customer with a two-cubic-yard garbage container would be provided up to three cubic yards of recycling container capacity for no charge.

- 96 gallon cart
- 1 YD - 8 YD containers (dumpster); 1 - 4 YD sizes available w/wheels
- 20 YD, 30 YD or 40 YD roll-off containers (Available for an additional cost)

Extra Recycling Pickups
To schedule additional pickups (within the 150% recycling service), call the Waste Management Customer Service at 1-800-592-9995.
Any additional recycling beyond the 150% recycling service may be fee-based as negotiated between the customer and Waste Management. Recycling collection in excess of your current monthly service level (as listed on your account) is charged according to the additional amount picked up, (35-gallon through 8-cubic yard containers will be charged according to container size).
Extra charges and special pickups are available at an additional cost also (see Solid Waste Rates above). If the amount of recycling you generate exceeds your current service, consider increasing your service level to the maximum amount allowed at no cost.
Setting Up Service
Business recyclables are collected from all participating customers as part of basic Waste Management garbage collection services.
To start recycling service, visit the Waste Management website or call Waste Management Customer Service at 1-800-592-9995. Business must have Waste Management garbage service to qualify for recycling services.
Compostables (yard waste, food & food-soiled paper)
City Code 8.08.120 prohibits yard waste from being mixed with garbage. Garbage containers containing yard waste and garbage mixed together will not be picked up on collection day.
Containers & Rates
Compostables service is available on a subscription basis. Compostables restart fee: If compostables service is canceled and restarted within 7 months a restart fee of $25.00 will be charged. When you sign up for yard waste service the City supplies a (grey) cart. Container sizes available include:
- 35-gallon cart
- 64-gallon cart
- 96-gallon cart
- 1-yard container (dumpster)
- 2-yard container (dumpster)
- Cart cleaning / deodorizing - Waste Management will clean and deodorize your compostables container for a fee of $15.00 per container. Please call 253-931-3038 to request this service.
- Compostables Rates (PDF)
Includes organic material from your yard, (leaves, grass, and branches under 3 inches in diameter by 3 feet long), and shredded paper (in paper bag). Compostables collection also includes food scraps and food-soiled paper. No sod, dirt, rocks, concrete, lumber or plastic bags.
Pick Up Schedule
Compostables are collected weekly. When you sign up for compostables service, your collection day will vary according to your location. Call Waste Management at 1-800-592-9995 to determine your collection. Compostables must be set out for collection by 6:00 AM on collection day. For missed collections, call Waste Management directly within 24 hours at 1-800-592-9995.
Extra Yard Waste Pickups
There is an additional charge for each extra unit of yard debris. An extra 32-gallon yard debris can/bag/box is $3.10 each, extra 1-yard dumpster is $33.30 and 2-yard dumpster is $55.74.
Extra yard waste must be labeled "Yard Waste". Put yard waste in your own containers (32-gallon, 65 lb. limit), heavy paper bags, or bundles (4' by 2' limit) and place next to the gray compostables cart at least three feet from your garbage. PLEASE: NO food Scraps, food-solid paper or plastic bags in extra yard waste bags, boxes or cans.
