Missed Collections

Property Owners/Managers (only) must call Waste Management directly at 1-800-592-9995 within 24 hours to request a Courtesy Pickup. Missed collections due to late container set-out, locked gates/enclosures, or use of customer's own lock on container(s) is not considered a missed collection and will incur a Return Trip Fee of $19.03 per material (see Solid Waste Rates) (PDF)


WM Garbage CartGARBAGE COLLECTION

If you own property within the Auburn city limits, per City Code, you are required to have a minimum garbage service level (10-gallons) whether the service is utilized or not. Property Owners must provide adequate garbage service level(s) for occupied units. Solid waste services cannot be split apart separately (to bill to tenants) from utility accounts that bill for water, sewer and/or storm services.

Containers & Rates:

Solid Waste Rates (PDF) vary depending on the garbage container size and pick up frequency. When you sign up for service, the City will provide a 35-gallon garbage cart (default size).

    Container sizes available -

  • Can with loose lid (grey):  10-gallon
  • Cart with wheels (green):  20-gallon (35-gallon cart with fixed black insert), 35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon.
  • Front-load, metal dumpster with lids (green):  1-yard, 1.5-yard, 2-yard, 3-yard, 4-yard, 6-yard or 8-yard;  1 to 4-yard dumpsters have wheels.
  • Roll-off metal box w/open-top (green):  20-yard, 30-yard or 40-yard; Available upon request with screen lid (no additional cost) or closed-top (fee applies).
  • Compactors: Waste Management can haul and empty customers own compactors for a fee. Sizes: 1 to 6 yard or 8 - 40 yard.
  • Locks from Waste Management available at no additional cost for front-load dumpsters or roll-off boxes with screen lid or closed-tops.
  • Temporary Containers for 60-day use or less:  (See Solid Waste Rates (PDF))
    • Front-load metal dumpster w/lids (green): *2-yard, *4-yard or 6-yard. *With wheels.
    • Roll-off metal box w/open top (green): 20-yard, 30-yard or 40-yard .  

Collection: 

  • Frequency - Cans or carts are collected one time per week. Front-load, roll-off or compactor containers may be collected up to 5 times a week (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)).
    • Permanent "On Call" Containers (Roll-off or Compactor):  To schedule a haul for a permanent roll-off or compactor container, call Waste Management directly (1-800-592-9995). Allow 24-48 hours for the haul.
  • Collection Day - Call Waste Management directly (1-800-592-9995) to determine your collection day.
  • Set-Out - Carts must be at the curbside and/or dumpsters available on property for collection by 7:00 AM on collection day.
    • Place 2 feet apart from other containers and 5 feet from any structure with lid facing street. 
    • Enclosures - Containers that need to be rolled out from an enclosure more than 5 feet to be emptied will incur a "Roll-out Fee", See Solid Waste Rates (PDF) for fee.
  • Missed Collection?  Property Owners/Managers (only) must call Waste Management directly (1-800-592-9995) within 24 hours to request a Courtesy Pickup.   • Extra Garbage - Garbage collected in excess of your current monthly service level (as listed on your account) will incur extra garbage charges:
    • $11.22 per container/box or bag (up to 32-gallons by volume) per pick up
    • $32.84 per front-load dumpster or roll-off box (up to 1 cubic yard) per pickup.
    • Put extra garbage in securely tied plastic bags or 32-gallon can w/lid and handles, (65 lb. limit) or box (2' x 3' x 2' limit) and place next to garbage cart. Extra garbage must be labeled "Garbage".   NOTE: If the amount of garbage your tenants generate exceeds the current container size, consider increasing your service level or consider utilizing the no additional cost City Recycling Program.   • Extra Pickup - To schedule an extra pickup the Property Manager/Owner (only) must call the City of Auburn Utilities Department at 253-931-3038. Extra garbage and Return Trip fees apply, see Solid Waste Rates (PDF).   

Materials Accepted:

Household garbage ONLY. NO yard waste or hazardous waste is accepted in the garbage. For more information visit the Waste Management website.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW):

HHW can be taken for FREE to the Auburn Wastemobilelinks to external site, open every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Click on the above link for what items are accepted.

Bulky Item Collection:

Items such as refrigerators, sofas and mattresses can be picked up by special arrangement at the property for an additional charge (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF) under Miscellaneous Service). To schedule a bulky item collection, the Property Manager/Owner (only) must call the City Utilities Department at 253-931-3038.  


WM Recycle CartRECYCLE COLLECTION

Recycling is included with garbage service at NO additional cost. Multifamily properties may choose to, but are not required to utilize City contracted Waste Management recycling services. Property Owners must authorize all recycle program set-ups.

Contaminated recycling containers (items not allowed in recycling) may not be picked up. Waste Management dispatch will contact the Property Owner/Manager, who will have the option to clean out contamination or pay to have it emptied as garbage for a fee (per container size, see Solid Waste Rates PDF).

Outreach & Education:  FREE site visits to access waste reduction and recycling needs, tenant recycling tote bags, guidelines, and training are available to help your recycling program be successful. To set up an appointment or if you have questions call 1-800-592-9995 or email Waste Management.

When you sign up for recycle service,  the City will provide recycle containers at no additional cost. Individual containers (per tenant) are available for properties with 4 units or less and mobile home parks. Properties with more than 4 units must place containers in a central location(s) cluster(s) for collection.

  • Carts with wheels (blue):  35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon
  • Front-load, metal dumpster with lids (blue):  1-yard, 1.5-yard, 2-yard, 3-yard, 4-yard, 6-yard or 8-yard;  1 thru 4-yard dumpsters have wheels.
  • Roll-off metal box w/open-top containers:  Not available through the City Recycling Program. Please call Waste Management directly at 1-800-592-9995 for availability and pricing (this service would be an additional charge).
  • Locks from Waste Management available at no additional cost for front-load dumpsters.

    • Put recycling in a box (2' x 3' x 2' size limit) or 32-gallon can with handles (65 lb. limit) and place next to the blue recycle container. No plastic bags (will be charged as extra garbage at $11.22 per bag).
  • Extra Pickup - A request to pickup extra recycle on non-regular collection day will incur a Return Trip Fee of $19.03. To schedule an additional pickup the Property Manager or Owner must call the City of Auburn Utilities Department at 253-931-3038.

Materials Accepted:

Clean, loose recyclables ONLY. NO garbage, yard waste, hazardous waste or shredded paper is accepted in the recycle. NO plastic bags. Recycle plastic bags at the grocery store. For more information visit the Waste Managementlinks to external site website.

WM Compostables CartCOMPOSTABLES COLLECTION (food, food-soiled paper & yard waste)

City Code 8.08.120 prohibits yard waste from being mixed with garbage. Garbage containers containing yard waste and garbage mixed together will not be picked up.

Containers, Rates & Services:

Compostable rates (PDF) vary depending on the size of container. Compostables service is available on a subscription basis. NOTE: Compostables restart fee - If compostables service is cancelled and restarted within 7 months a restart fee of $25.00 will be charged. When you sign up for yard waste service the City supplies a (grey) cart.

Container sizes available - 

  • Cart with wheels (grey):  35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon  
  • Front-load, metal dumpster with lids (green):  1-yard or 2-yard
  • Locks from Waste Management available at no additional cost for front-load dumpsters.

Cart cleaning / deodorizing - Waste Management will clean and deodorize your compostables container for a fee of $15.00 per container. Call the City of Auburn Utilities Department at 253-931-3038 to request service.

Collection:

    • $3.32 for each extra unit (can/bag/box up to 32-gallons in volume) per pickup. 
    • $37.23 for each extra yard (up to 1-yard in volume) per pickup. 
    • Put extra yard debris (NO food) in 32-gallon w/lid and handles, (65 lb. limit), approved yard debris paper bags or bundles (4' x 2' limit) and place next to compostables cart. Extra yard debris must be labeled "Yard". No plastic bags or food in extra yard debris containers.
  • Extra Pickup - A request to an pickup extra compostables on a non-regular collection day will incur  a fee:
    • $19.03 per cart
    • $34.31 1-yard per dumpster
    • $57.42 2-yard per dumpster
  • To schedule an additional pickup the Property Manager or Owner ust call the City of Auburn Utilities Department at 253-931-3038.

Materials Accepted:

Includes organic material from the yard, (leaves, grass, and branches under 4" in diameter x 3' long), shredded paper (in paper bag) and/or food scraps and food-soiled paper. No sod, dirt, rocks, concrete, lumber or plastic bags.
