    Missed Collections

    Waste Management customers must call the hauler directly (1-800-592-9995) within 24 hours of the day missed to request a Courtesy Pickup for missed materials. Missed collections due to late container set-outs is not considered a missed collection and will incur a Return Trip Fee of $19.03 per material (see Solid Waste Rates link below).

    WM Garbage CartGarbage Collection 

    If you live within the Auburn city limits, per City Code, you are required to have a minimum garbage service level (10-gallons) for each occupied unit, whether the service is utilized or not.

    Rental Properties:

    To set up a new utility billing account under a tenant name, the property owner/manager must submit a Tenant Release Form (TRF). A set-up fee of $25 is charged on the new tenant account.

    Containers & Rates:

    Solid Waste Rates (PDF) vary depending on your garbage container size. When you sign up for service, the City will provide a 35-gallon garbage cart (default size).

    Container sizes available:

    • Can with loose lid (grey): 10-gallon
    • Cart with wheels (green): 20-gallon (35-gallon cart with a 20-gallon fixed black insert), 35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon 
    • Temporary Containers for 60 day use or less (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)) :
      • Front-load, metal dumpster w/lids (green): *2-yard, *4-yard or 6-yard. *With wheels.
      • Roll-off metal box w/open-top (green): 20-yard, 30-yard or 40-yard; Available up request with screen lid (no additional cost) or closed-top (fee applies).

    Collection:

    • Frequency - Garbage is picked up once per week.

    • Set-out - Carts must be at the curbside/alley for collection by 7:00 AM on collection day.
      • Place 2 feet apart from other carts and 5 feet from any structure with lid facing street or alley.
    • Missed Collection? Customer must call Waste Management directly with 24 hours at 1-800-592-9995. Missed collections due to late set-out is not considered a missed collection and will incur a Return Trip fee of $19.03 per material (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)).
    • Extra Garbage - Garbage collected in excess of your current monthly service level (as listed on your account) will incur extra charges of $11.22 per container/box or bag (up to 32-gallons by volume), per pickup.  Example of extra garbage (PDF)
      • Put extra garbage in securely tied plastic bags or 32-gallon cans w/lid and 2 handles (65 lb. limit) and place net to garbage cart. Extra garbage must be labeled "Garbage". 
    • Extra Pickup - A request to pickup extra garbage on non-regular collection day will incur a Return Trip Fee of $19.03 (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)). To schedule an extra pickup call the City of Auburn Utilities department at 253-931-3038.

    Materials Accepted:

    Household garbage ONLY. NO yard waste or hazardous waste. For more information visit the Waste Management website.

    Household Hazardous Waste (HHW):

    HHW can be taken for FREE to the Auburn Wastemobilelinks to external site, open every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Click on the above link for what items are accepted. 

    Bulky Item Collection:

    Items such as refrigerators, sofas and mattresses can be picked up by special arrangement at the curbside for an additional charge (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)). To schedule a bulky item pickup, contact the City Utilities department at 253-931-3038. 


    WM Recycle CartRecycling Collection

    Start, Stop or Change Service:

    Contact the City of Auburn Utilities department at 253-931-3038 or email us.

    Containers:

    When you sign up for garbage service, the City will provide a 64-gallon recycle cart (default size).

    Container sizes available: 

    • Cart with wheels (blue): 35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon

    Collection:

    • Frequency - Recycling is collected every other week on your garbage day depending on your location.     
    • What is my collection day & recycle week?
    • Set-out - Carts must be at the curbside/alley for collection by 7:00 AM on collection day.
      • Place 2 feet apart from other carts and 5 feet from any structure with lid facing street or alley.
    • Missed Collection? Customer must call Waste Management directly with 24 hours at 1-800-592-9995. Missed collections due to late set-out is not considered a missed collection and will incur a Return Trip fee of $19.03 per material (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)).
    • Extra Recycle - There is NO additional cost for extra recycling if collected on a regular scheduled collection day from your own household. You may request a larger or a second cart by contacting customer service at 253-931-3038.
      • Put extra recyclables in a cardboard box (2' x 3' x 2' size limit), paper bags or 32-gallon can w/lid and 2 handles (65 lb. limit,) and place next to the recycle cart. Extra recycle must be labeled "Recycle".  NO plastic bags (will be charged as extra garbage at $11.22 per bag). 
    • Extra Pickup - A request to pickup extra recycle on non-regular collection days will incur a Return Trip Fee of $19.03 (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)). To schedule an extra pickup call the City of Auburn Utilities department at 253-931-3038.

    Materials Accepted:

    Clean, loose recyclables ONLY. NO garbage, yard waste, hazardous waste or shredded paper is accepted in recycle. NO plastic bags allowed in recycling. Recycle plastic bags at a grocery store.

    Curbside Motor Oil Collection - Residents can recycle up to 2 gallon of motor oil on recycle collection day at no cost. Oil must be in plastic jugs with a screw top and labeled with address and phone number. Motor oil can not be mixed with other liquids.


    WM Compostables CartCompostables Collection (yard waste, food & food-soiled paper)

    City Code #8.08.120 prohibits yard waste from being mixed with garbage. Garbage containers containing yard waste and garbage mixed together will not be picked up.

    Containers, Rates & Services:

    Compostables rates (PDF) vary depending on the size of container. Compostables service is available on a subscription basis. NOTE:  Compostables restart fee - If compostables service is cancelled and restarted within 7 months a restart fee of $25.00 will be charged. When you sign up for service the City will supply a (grey) compostables cart.

    Container sizes available include - 

    • Cart with wheels (grey):  35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon        
    • Clean Cart Service - Waste Management will clean and deodorize your compostables cart for a FEE of $15 per container. Call the City at 253-931-3038 to request service. 

    Collection:

    • Frequency - Compostables are picked up once per week on your garbage collection day.

    • Set-out - Containers must be set out for collection by 7:00 AM on collection day.
      • Place 2 feet apart from other carts and 5 feet from any structure with lid facing street or alley.
    • Missed Collection? Customer must call Waste Management directly with 24 hours at 1-800-592-9995. Missed collections due to late set-out is not considered a missed collection and will incur a Return Trip fee of $19.03 per material (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)).
    • Extra Compostables - Extra compostables above the regular service level(as listed on your account) will be collected on a regular scheduled collection day for a fee of $3.32 for each extra unit (can/bag/box up to 32-gallons in volume), per pick up.
      • Put extra yard debris (NO food) in your own containers (32-gallon cans w/lid and 2 handles, 65 lb. limit), approved yard debris paper bags or bundles (4' by 2' limit) and place next to compostables cart.  Extra yard waste must be labeled "Yard Waste". NO plastic bags or food in extra compostables containers.
    • Extra Pickup - A request to pickup extra compostables on non-regular collection day will incur a Return Trip Fee of $19.03 (see Solid Waste Rates (PDF)). To schedule an extra pickup call the City of Auburn Utilities department at 253-931-3038.

    Materials Accepted:

    Organic material from your yard, (leaves, grass, and branches under 4 inches in diameter by 4 feet long), food scraps and food-soiled paper, and shredded paper (in paper bag). No sod, dirt, rocks, concrete or lumber. For more information visit the Waste Management website.
