    Waste Management Customers

    Collection Guidelines for all services.

    WM Garbage CartGarbage Collection 

    If you live within the Auburn city limits, per City Code, you are required to have a minimum garbage service level (10-gallons) for each occupied unit, whether the service is utilized or not.

    Rental Properties:

    To set up a new utility billing account under a tenant name, the property owner/manager must submit a Tenant Release Form (TRF) (PDF). A set-up fee of $25 is charged on the new tenant account.

    Start, Stop or Change Service:

    Contact the City of Auburn Utilities department at 253-931-3038 or email us.

    Containers & Rates:

    Solid Waste Rates (PDF) vary depending on your garbage container size. When you sign up for service, the City will provide a 35-gallon garbage cart (default size). Container sizes available include:

    • Can with loose lid (grey): 10-gallon can
    • Cart with wheels (green): 20-gallon (35-gallon cart with a 20-gallon fixed black insert), 35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon 
    • Temporary Containers:  Front-load (2, 4 or 6-yard) and Roll-off (20, 30 or 40-yard) containers are available for a fee. See Solid Waste Rates link (above) for pricing.

    Collection:

    • Garbage is picked up once per week.
    • What is my garbage collection day? Click on the new Citizen Look Up Tool or on this map (PDF) to determine your collection day. 
    • Set container at the curbside or alley 2 feet apart from other carts and 5 feet from any structure with lid facing street.
    • Containers must be set out for collection by 7:00 AM on collection day. Return trips for late set-outs will incur a Return Trip charge $19.03 (plus tax) per material.
    • Missed Collection? Call Waste Management directly within 24 hours at 1-800-592-9995.
    • Extra Garbage Pickup & Charge - Garbage collected in excess of your current monthly service level (as listed on your account) will incur extra charges of $11.22 per container/box or bag (up to 32-gallons by volume), per pickup.  Example of extra garbage (PDF)
        NOTE:  Extra garbage should be placed in securely tied plastic bags or 32-gallon cans w/lid and 2 handles (65 lb. limit) and must be labeled "Garbage".

    Materials Accepted:

    Household garbage ONLY. NO yard waste or hazardous waste. For more information visit the Waste Management website.

    Household Hazardous Waste (HHW): HHW can be taken for FREE to the Auburn Wastemobilelinks to external site, open every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Click on the above link for what items are accepted. 

    Bulky Item Collection:  Items such as refrigerators, sofas and mattresses can be picked up by special arrangement at the curb for an additional charge (see Solid Waste Rates above under Miscellaneous Service) for a FEE. To schedule a bulky item pick up, contact the City Utilities department at 253-931-3038. 


    WM Recycle CartRecycling Collection

    Start, Stop or Change Service:

    Contact the City of Auburn Utilities department at 253-931-3038 or email us.

    Containers:

    When you sign up for service, the City will provide a 64-gallon recycle cart (default size). Container sizes available include: 

    • Cart with wheels (blue): 35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon

    Collection:

    • Recycling is collected every other week on your garbage day depending on your location.

      • Recycle (Schedule "A" or "B") Collection Week map map (PDF).
    •  2017 Recycle Collection Calendars:

    • Extra Recycling Pickup - There is NO additional cost for extra recycling from your own household. You may request a larger or a second cart by contacting customer service at 253-931-3038.
      • NOTE: Extra recyclables must put in cardboard boxes (size limit 2' x 3'), paper bags or 32-gallon cans w/lid and 2 handles (65 lb. limit,) and must be labeled "Recycle".  Place next to your blue recycle cart. Do not put extra recycling in plastic bags or recyclables will be charged as extra garbage ($11.22 per bag). 

    Materials Accepted:

    Paper, cardboard, plastic bottle, jugs, dairy tubs and (flexible) party cups, glass bottles and jars, aluminum, tin. NO shredded paper. Put recyclables loose into cart. NO plastic bags allowed in recycling. Recycle plastic bags at a grocery store.

    Curbside Motor Oil Collection - Residents can recycle up to 2 gallon of motor oil on recycle collection day at no cost. Oil must be in plastic jugs with a screw top and labeled with address and phone number. Motor oil can not be mixed with other liquids.


    WM Compostables CartCompostables Collection (yard waste, food & food-soiled paper)

    City Code #8.08.120 prohibits yard waste from being mixed with garbage. Garbage containers containing yard waste and garbage mixed together will not be picked up.

    Containers, Rates & Services:

    Compostables service is optional and available on a subscription basis. Compostable rates (PDF) vary by size. When you sign up for service the City will supply a (grey) compostables cart. Container sizes available include: 

    • Cart with wheels (grey):  35-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon
    • Compostables Re-start Fee:  If you cancel and restart compostables service within 7 months of your cancelation date there will be a restart FEE of $25.
    • Clean Cart Service - Waste Management will swap your container for a FEE of $15. Call the City at 253-931-3038 to request service. 

    Collection:

    • Compostables are picked up once per week on your garbage collection day.

    • Set container at the curbside or alley 2 feet apart from other carts and 5 feet from any structure with lid facing street.
    • Containers must be set out for collection by 7:00 AM on collection day. Return trips for late set-outs (after 7:00 AM) will incur a Return Trip charge $19.03 (plus tax) per material.
    • Missed Collection? Call Waste Management directly within 24 hours at 1-800-592-9995.
    • Extra Yard Waste Pickup & Charge - There is an additional charge of $3.32 for each extra unit (can/bag/box up to 32-gallons in volume) of yard waste.
      • NOTE: Extra yard debris may be put in your own containers (32-gallon cans w/lid and handles, 65 lb. limit), approved yard debris paper bags or bundles (4' by 2' limit).  Extra yard waste must be labeled "Yard Waste". Put yard waste next to the gray compostables cart at least three feet from your garbage. NO plastic bags, food & food-soiled paper is allowed in extra yard waste containers.

    Materials Accepted:

    Organic material from your yard, (leaves, grass, and branches under 4 inches in diameter by 4 feet long), food scraps and food-soiled paper, and shredded paper (in paper bag). No sod, dirt, rocks, concrete or lumber. For more information visit the Waste Management website.
