Long-term system planning and improvements

Comprehensive transportation plan

Overview

The Comprehensive Transportation Plan is the City's long-range plan for developing its transportation system over the next 15 years. It is an element of the City's overall Comprehensive Plan and is a tool to evaluate and improve the transportation system in Auburn. The Comprehensive Transportation Plan is a multi-modal plan, addressing the street system, the non-motorized system (pedestrians, bicyclists & equestrians), and the transit system (buses & commuter rail).

The Comprehensive Transportation Plan was adopted on December 5, 2005 and is amended annually as needed. The Plan contains a needs assessment and set of future recommendations for all modes, as well as policies and funding strategies to guide implementation of the Plan. The City examined existing roads, transit services, and non-motorized travel facilities and projected the community's mobility needs into the future to identify conditions in the year 2020. The City also looked at current and future needs related to pedestrian access, recreation, freight movement, transit service, roadway congestion and safety.

During development of the Plan, the City worked with a technical advisory committee comprised of community representatives, the local business community, city staff, elected officials, a planning commissioner, and other government agencies. The City also held a citywide open house, and staff attended several neighborhood meetings to speak about the Plan.

The Comprehensive Transportation Plan reflects the needs and sensibilities of the Auburn community and, in doing so, seeks to:

  • Enhance the quality of life for all Auburn residents;
  • Encourage healthy community principles;
  • Promote a transportation system that supports local businesses and enhances economic development opportunities;
  • Create a transportation system that is thoughtfully designed and welcoming to visitors; and
  • Provide a balanced, multi-modal transportation system that addresses local and regional needs.
