Access Auburn - The City of Auburn's Wireless Internet Service

Access Auburn is the City of Auburn's guest wireless service. It is available free of charge to all visitors at the following City facilities:

  • Auburn City Hall - 25 W Main St
  • One Main Street Building - 1 E Main St
  • Auburn Avenue Theater - 10 Auburn Avenue
  • Auburn Justice Center - 340 E Main St
  • Auburn Community & Event Center - 910 9th Street SE
  • Auburn Senior Activity Center - 808 Ninth St SE
  • Auburn Golf Course Clubhouse - 29630 Green River Rd SE
  • Outdoor wireless coverage is available at:
    • Sunset Park, 1306 69th ST SE
    • Les Gove Park (limited areas)

The City is continuing to expand guest WiFi access in other public areas throughout the City.

Access Auburn is being offered on an "AS IS" basis. The City does not guarantee performance, privacy, or reliability. The free Wi-Fi service has no HelpDesk or customer service support. Staff assistance is not available to help you configure your computer. General guidelines to assist with connecting to Access Auburn are provided in the Wireless Quick Setup Guide below; please note that you will be required to accept Auburn’s Terms of Use Policy as part of the logon procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I use the city's Wi-Fi network?
Access Auburn uses the Wi-Fi standard (also known as IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n). Your laptop may have wireless built-in, or you can add a Wi-Fi compatible network card to it. Most users can simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer or other wireless device and turn it on.

How do I connect to the internet through the wireless network?
Wireless access points, located throughout the buildings, communicate with your wireless device. You should be able to connect anywhere in the public areas. When your wireless network card senses the Access Auburn signal, a message appears on the screen indicating the wireless network is available. If there are multiple wireless networks detected, you will need to select the Access Auburn network to connect. Open your web browser and it should automatically redirect you to a page displaying the Terms of Use Policy. Accept the policy by selecting the Submit button at the bottom of the page. You are now ready to access the Internet.

Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?
Access Auburn is open to all guest users; no special settings or passwords are required.

Is my information safe while using wireless?
Access Auburn does not provide security or confidentiality for your computer or data. Connecting your computer to the Internet via Access Auburn could expose it to the same viruses and other security risks as any Internet connection. You are responsible for ensuring that your computer is protected against such threats. The City of Auburn takes no responsibility, and accepts no liability, for any direct or consequential harm to you, your computer equipment, or your other property that may result from your use of Access Auburn.

Can I print while using the City of Auburn Wireless Internet Service?
No. Printing is not available.

Are there any restrictions on my use of the Internet?
Yes. The City of Auburn Wireless Public Use Policy & Guidelines prohibit abusive or illegal activity while using Access Auburn. Access Auburn is filtered. Filters attempt to prevent users from viewing certain portions of the Internet, but they do not guarantee objectionable material will not be displayed. Monitoring a child’s access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian. Remember, Access Auburn is being offered on an AS IS basis. The city does not guarantee performance, privacy, or reliability. Access Auburn has no Help Desk or customer service support. Staff assistance is not available to help you configure your computer. Use of Access Auburn is at your own risk.

Wireless Quick Setup Guide

Note: These general guidelines are provided to assist with connection to Access Auburn but each individual situation can be different and the city makes no guarantee that following only the steps below will successfully connect you to Access Auburn.

SSID (network name) = Access Auburn

DHCP = Obtain an IP address automatically

DNS = Obtain DNS server address automatically

Network Type/Mode = Infrastructure mode or Access Point

IMPORTANT – If you are using a VPN client for secure access to a corporate network, make sure you disable the client prior to connecting to Access Auburn. You can re-enable the client after you have accepted the terms of use and authenticated to Access Auburn.

Please enable pop-ups in your web browser prior to connecting to Access Auburn. This will allow the Logout page to be displayed after you have authenticated to the network. When you are finished with your session, close your browser and choose "logout" in the pop-up to be disconnected from the network.

We recommend you note the settings in your TCP/IP configuration before you change them. You will need restore the original settings when you are finished using the Access Auburn Wi-Fi network.

Windows 7

  1. From the system tray, select "Network/Wireless Adapter".
  2. Select "Access Auburn"
  3. Select "Connect", do not enable the "Join Automatically" option.

Windows Vista

  1. From the Control Panel, under the Network and Internet section, select "Connect to the Internet".
  2. Select "Wireless".
  3. Select "Access Auburn", then "Connect".
  4. Select "Connect Anyway".
  5. Select "Next".
  6. Wait until "Testing Your Internet Connection" is complete. Select "Browse the Internet Now".
  7. Now open Internet Explorer. Note: In Internet Explorer 7 or 8, a message will be displayed "There is a problem with this website's security certificate". Choose "Continue to this website"” to be redirected to the Terms of Use page. You must accept the Terms of Use and log in to gain access to the wireless network.
  8. Your laptop is now configured to access the Internet via the wireless adaptor.

Windows XP

  1. From Control Panel, select "Network and Internet Connections".
  2. Select "Network and Internet Connections".
  3. Select "Network Connections".
  4. Right-click "Wireless Network Connection" and open the Properties for the wireless adaptor.
  5. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select the Properties button.
  6. On the General Tab page, select "Obtain an IP Address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
  7. Select OK on the Internet Protocol Properties window, and then select OK on the Wireless Network Connection Properties window. Your computer will now be configured to access the Internet via the wireless adaptor.
  8. In Internet Explorer 7 or 8, a message will display "There is a problem with this website's security certificate". Choose "Continue to this website" to be redirected to the Terms of Use page. You must accept the Terms of Use and log in to gain access to the wireless network.

Windows 2000 Network Settings

  1. Select the Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Dialup Connections.
  2. Right-click on "Wireless Network connection" or "Local Area Connection" and select properties.
  3. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select the Properties button. If more than one TCP/IP protocol is listed, look for the one associated with your wireless adapter.
  4. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
  5. Select OK to close the Properties window, and then select OK. Your laptop will now be configured to access the Internet via the wireless adaptor.

MacIntosh (OS X)

  1. Navigate to the Network Panel in System Preferences and choose Airport. If "AirPort is currently off" displays, select Connect, and then click "Turn AirPort On" in the Internet Connect: AirPort" dialog box. (For your convenience, you may then want to quit Internet Connect to close the Airport dialog box.)
  2. Select Configure. A window displays with the following four tabs: AirPort, TCP/IP, AppleTalk, and Proxies.
  3. Select the AirPort tab and choose "Automatic" from the drop-down list next to the "By default, join:" field.
  4. Select the TCP/IP tab, and verify that "Using DHCP" is selected next to "Configure IPv4".
  5. Close the Network System Preference and select Apply.
