Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training
CERT training is designed to teach community members how to help themselves and the people around them during and after a disaster.
CERT is a blend of hands-on and classroom education that will have participants practicing extinguishing fires, treating injuries, and search and rescue techniques, as well as learn skills like emergency preparedness, utility safety, prioritizing medical care, emergency communications, and how to address the psychological impact of disasters. At the end of the course, CERTs will find, rescue, and treat 'injured' survivors for the final earthquake drill!
CERT graduates have the opportunity to join other CERTs from Auburn and neighboring cities for continued education classes, periodic disaster drills, and develop neighborhood-level emergency response plans together.
The CERT training is comprised of seven, three-hour-long evening classes, with a final Saturday-morning disaster drill. Classes are taught by local emergency management staff, police officers, firefighters, and other professionals.
Graduates have the opportunity to become registered emergency workers with their respective cities and the State of Washington, allowing them to aid in local and regional disasters. Graduates also have the opportunity to participate in local and regional continuing education activities, including training and field exercises. Fire department and emergency management professionals from Auburn and surrounding jurisdictions, as well as the Valley Regional Fire Authority (VRFA) teach CERT classes.
