Notice of Council Vacancy Recruitment

The City of Auburn is requesting applications from residents of Auburn to fill a vacancy on the City Council. The term will commence once a candidate is appointed by a majority vote of the City Council and will expire after the results of the general election to be held November 2023 have been certified.

The Auburn City Council is a non-partisan, part-time legislative body. Auburn incorporated in 1891 and is a Strong Mayor form of government. Council meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the first and third Mondays of the month, Council study sessions are held at 5:30 PM on the second, fourth and fifth Monday of the month, with some exceptions. There may be other meetings to attend during the week as well.

The timeline for filling the Council vacancy is as follows:

  • Tuesday, January 3, 2023:  Applications due to City Clerk by 5:00 PM
  • Monday, January 23,2023:  Candidate interviews (Special Meeting, 5:00 PM)
  • Monday, January 23, 2023:  Council vote (Special Meeting, 7 pm)
  • Monday, January 30, 2023:  Swearing in (Regular Study Session, 5:30 PM)

Residents interested in applying must have resided within the City of Auburn at least for one year and must be a registered voter. Interested residents may apply online, pick up an application form at City Hall (25 West Main Street) or may have the application mailed by contacting City Clerk Shawn Campbell at 253-931-3055 or [email protected].

The appointed Councilmember will have the same level of duty and privilege as all other Councilmembers, Auburn City Councilmembers are compensated $1,460.28 per month during the length of their service. 

Applications must be received by 5:00 pm, on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. Applications received after 5:00 pm will not be accepted.
