The goal of Traffic Safety Program is to reduce speeding and cut through traffic in residential neighborhoods to improve the residents’ quality of life and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

2026 Focus Area: I St NE

This year, the City will be evaluating I St NE between Harvey Rd and 42nd Pl NE. I St NE is an arterial street that passes through, and serves directly, many residential neighborhoods. As the City continues to grow, corridors like I St NE will like experience higher volumes of vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. The City's Comprehensive Transportation Plan identifies roadway improvement projects needed to address this growth and eventually, as funding is secured and the growth occurs, the projects will be implemented. However, with the connection of I St NE to S 277th St that was recently completed, upcoming planned development projects, and the upcoming King County Metro I-Line Rapid Ride on Auburn Way N, the City has heard concerns regarding vehicle speeds, the posted speed limit, cars leaving the roadway, stop sign compliance, and gaps in the sidewalk. The Neighborhood Traffic Safety Project will evaluate these concerns and identify near-term, and in some cases temporary, solutions that can be implemented ahead of the larger Comprehensive Transportation Plan projects that require substantial amounts of funding that is currently not available.
