All are welcome to come and work in a casual, no-pressure environment where you can grab a cup of coffee or tea, work on your projects and chat with other artists! No need to sign up or register, just drop in!

The performance will highlight the expressive range of the violin through both traditional repertoire and contemporary works, offering audiences an intimate and dynamic musical experience. One selection will feature violin with electronics, composed by Brannon Warn Johnston, adding a modern sound world that complements the acoustic program.

Artist Bios

Ilana Zaks
is an American violinist, educator, and multidisciplinary artist. She has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral violinist, and is currently a faculty member at Rollins College, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute faculty and formerly Seattle Conservatory.  Ilana holds degrees from the New England Conservatory and Yale School of Music, where she studied with Donald Weilerstein, Itzhak Perlman and Ani Kavafian. She is passionate about community-engaged performances that connect audiences through storytelling and music.

Brannon Warn-Johnston (age 17) is a composer and multi-instrumentalist from Seattle, WA who often takes inspiration for her compositions from lived experiences including backpacking/camping trips with her violin, special moments with her family and her journey with cancer. She has participated in the Juilliard Summer Composition Program and NPR’s Learning and Media Lab Fellowship where she was featured on From the Top’s show “Young Pacific Northwest Talent.” Brannon’s works have been performed in Carnegie Hall and by orchestras/ensembles including: Seattle Symphony, Symphony Tacoma, International Contemporary Ensemble, Northwest Symphony Orchestra, and Seattle Festival Orchestra. Her music has received awards from Tribeca New Music Young Composer Competition, Foundation for Modern Music International Composers Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Composers Contest, and others. Her electroacoustic project “Resonant Coast” was recently selected for the Connecticut Sea Grant Arts Support Award.

Poets at the Postmark

Arrive early to peruse artwork by local artists and have refreshments! Bring a poem to share during the open mic, and bring a poetry book to swap for a poetry book at our book exchange!

June's featured poet is Janée J. Baugher, MFA (writer, editor, and lecturer)!

Featured Poet's bio:

Janée J. Baugher, the author of the only craft book of its kind, The Ekphrastic Writer: Creating Art-Influenced Poetry, Fiction and Nonfiction (McFarland, 2020), has been a featured poet at the Library of Congress. She’s a longtime assistant editor at Boulevard magazine (St. Louis) and lives in Seattle where the Office of Arts & Culture awarded her a 2024-2025 City Artist grant to complete her memoir, “Suicide in the Mirror.” Her third full-length poetry collection, The Andrew Wyeth Chronicles, was selected by Shane McCrae for the Dorset Prize (Tupelo Press, 2026). Janée was educated at Boston University and Eastern Washington University.

Painting with Paper: Integrated Surrealist Collage

Visit Postmark Center for the Arts for a FREE workshop with collage artist Melanie Reed! This workshop is designed to investigate the possibility of taking collage-making to a new level, bringing out the best of what it’s best potentially suited for as a medium. We will be taking a close look at source material, story-telling, and composition principles, and examining unique ways to combine disparate imagery for surreal effect. All materials provided.

No need to register, just drop in!

Rhythm and Rhymes: Story Hour with Auburn Symphony Orchestra

Taking inspiration from a children’s book, an ASO musician will teach an age-appropriate, interactive music program, and an Auburn librarian will then read the story aloud. Afterwards, families will be invited to explore instruments, and receive a craft to take home. Rhythm and Rhymes combines music and literature for children and families to enjoy over the course of 45 minutes.

This event is free and family friendly. Funded by the Postmark Programming Grant and 4 Culture King County.

Second Saturdays: Planting Seeds for Stories

A square graphic reading 2nd Saturday June 13In dialogue with artworks in the Postmark's current gallery exhibition, Discovered Narratives, plant seeds and create your own written stories and poems from the exhibition’s imagery. A short group-led activity will provide fertile groundwork before you begin to dig into your own free writing exercise with one (or more) of the works in the show.

Feel free to bring your own writing instruments but paper and pencils will be provided. Group-led activity starts hourly beginning at 1PM (lasting approximately 1 hour). Drop-ins are welcome!

Not only through the imprint of your own face, but the stories and symbols that help make you who you are. Bring a partner for this activity! Parent and child partners are welcome. Partners will use the art making process as a way to express and share personal or family stories. In this FREE two-session workshop, we will make plaster masks on our own faces, which will help prompt us to share personal stories.

Redefining Luxury - The Black Experience of Sustainable Textile Practices

Lecture followed by Q&A

Luxury is more than exclusivity—it’s tradition, craftsmanship, and sustainability. This immersive workshop explores the deep-rooted sustainable fashion practices within the Black experience, tracing their origins from Africa to Black American fashion today.

This presentation will touch on sewing techniques and the empowerment of sewing machines, embroidery, weaving, and royal garments, and Kente cloth weaving. Visitors are invited to touch an authentic piece of Kente cloth handwoven by a Ghanaian master and the first 25 visitors will receive a piece inspired by this tradition to take home.

Arts of India Present and Past

A square graphic reading 2nd Saturday August 8Join us at the Postmark in celebrating the rich music of India performed by the band, Dhawayam. A group of high-school students will be performing South Indian fusion music for all to enjoy. Band performance from 12:30-1:30PM. 

Following the music will be a unique presentation on the endangered tradition of Indian terracotta temple reliefs. Presenter Shruti Ghatak will explain the history, symbolism, and cultural significance of the reliefs while connecting it to contemporary art and community dialogue. Presentation will be followed by a brief Q&A.
